
Bruins Advance to Finals of Stanford Classic at Cypress Point

The UCLA men's golf team advanced to the finals of the Stanford Classic with match play victories against Georgia and Texas Monday at Cypress Point Golf Club on the Monterey Peninsula.
The Bruins will meet Duke tomorrow in the finals of the inaugural tournament, playing six singles matches with 12 points at stake. Points are awarded on the front side, back side and overall.
In Monday's opening round four-ball (best ball) match, the Bruins defeated the Bulldogs, 8.5-3.5. Senior Pontus Widegren and freshman Jonathan Garrick tied Georgia's Sam Straka and Joey Garber, 2-2. Sophomore Manav Shah and freshman Lorens Chan defeated Lee McCoy and Michael Cromie, 3.5-0.5. In the third pairing, senior Pedro Figueiredo and Matt Pinizzotto defeated TJ Mitchell and Jeff Straka, 3-1.
In the afternoon foursomes matches, the Bruins defeated the Longhorns, 6.5-5.5. The Widegren-Garrick pairing beat Jordan Spieth and Toni Hakula, 3.5-0.5. Shah and Chan lost 3-1 to Cody Gribble and Jonathan Schnitzer. In the third match, Figueiredo and Pinizzotto tied Julio Vegas and Kramer Hickok, 2-2.
Duke defeated Stanford in its semifinal match, 7.5-4.5.
