With still two days to go before Friday's Opening Ceremonies, women's soccer kicked off the 2012 London Olympic Games on Wednesday, and three of four UCLA players in the competition were in action.
U.S.
Lauren Cheney and Sydney Leroux both played in a 4-2 U.S. victory over France in Glasgow, Scotland. Team USA actually trailed 2-0 in the match before scoring four unanswered goals to pick up three points in Group G. Cheney played the entire match, while Leroux came in as a substitute for Megan Rapinoe in the 84th minute. The USA will continue group play in Glasgow, taking on Colombia at Hampden Park on July 28 (5 p.m. local / 12 p.m. ET).
Canada
UCLA junior midfielder Chelsea Stewart played 19 minutes in Canada's 2-1 opening-match loss to Japan on Wednesday. Stewart entered the match in the 71st minute with Japan already owning a 2-1 lead. Canada continues Group F action against South Africa on July 28 at City of Coventry Stadium.
New Zealand
UCLA sophomore Rosie White did not see any action in New Zealand's 1-0 loss to host Great Britian in Cardiff on Wednesday. The Kiwis are scheduled to next face powerhouse Brazil on July 28, also at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
