In the first full day of action at the Olympic Games, the U.S. women's soccer team (Lauren Cheney, Sydney Leroux) earned a 3-0 victory over Colombia in group play, and Canada (Chelsea Stewart) recorded a 3-0 win over South Africa. Also in action were Bruins in men's tennis and men's rowing.
Women's Soccer
Lauren Cheney played the full 90 minutes in Team USA's 3-0 victory over Colombia at Hampden Park on Saturday. Sydney Leroux also saw action in the victory, coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute. With the win, the Americans took firm control of Group G heading into their final group match against Korea DPR on July 31 (12:15 p.m. EST) at Old Trafford. The U.S. needs either a win or a tie to clinch first place in Group G. (Recap)
After falling to Japan in its opening match of the 2012 London Olympics on Wednesday, Canada rebounded to defeat South Africa, 3-0 at City of Coventry Stadium on Saturday. UCLA junior Chelsea Stewart was the first player of the bench for the Canadians, entering the match in the 68th minute. Next up for Canada is a Group F showdown with Sweden at St. James' Park on Tuesday. (Recap)
UCLA sophomore Rosie White saw her first action of the 2012 Olympic Games on Saturday, coming in as a second-half substitute (81st min.) in New Zealand's 1-0 Group E loss to Brazil at Millennium Stadium. Both team's played scoreless soccer for most of the match until Brazil took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Cristiane in the 86th minute. Next up for New Zealand is a showdown with Cameroon on Tuesday at City of Coventry Stadium. The Kiwis likely must win by several goals in order to even have a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals as one of the two best third-place teams. (Recap)
Men's Tennis
Former UCLA men's tennis player Marcin Matkowski and his partner Mariusz Fyrstenberg were upset in the first round of doubles play on Saturday at Wimbledon's All England Club. The Polish duo, which was seeded fourth and one of the favorites to medal in London, suffered a heartbreaking 7-6, 6-7, 8-6 loss to Spain's David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez.
Men's Rowing
U.S. rower Silas Stafford, who attended UCLA and rowed on the club team before transferring to Stanford, finished in fourth place in his heat in the men's pair with partner Tom Peszek. Stafford and Peszek move on to the repechage for a chance to advance to the semifinals. Their race will begin at 2:10am PT on Monday, July 30, with TV coverage at 9:30am PT on NBC and live online coverage at NBCOlympics.com.
Women's Volleyball
UCLA Hall of Fame volleyball player Karch Kiraly is an assistant coach for the U.S. team, which won its Olympic opener against Korea, 3-1.
