I Am ... Full Out: The Ariana Berlin Movie

October 03, 2014 | Gymnastics

Ariana Berlin's comeback story was made for Hollywood: Nearly-fatal car accident ends a young girl's Olympic gymnastics aspirations. Girl turns to dance but does not give up her other dream of competing for the UCLA Gymnastics team. Girl gets an opportunity to make the team at UCLA and ends up becoming an All-American.

This wasn't an inspirational movie plot, though; this was real life. But art is now imitating life, as Berlin's story is being turned into a movie called Full Out.

Produced by Jeff Deverett, Full Out begins full production in Toronto next week. Degrassi actress Ana Golja will play Berlin, and Berlin will be her stunt double. Berlin, who last competed in 2009, went back to training in September with UCLA assistant coach Randy Lane. Although a virtual “grandma” in gymnastics at age 26, Berlin, who possesses the work-rate and determination of a true champion, quickly regained her old skills that helped her earn All-American status at UCLA.

That Berlin was able to get back to form after she completed her collegiate career nearly five years ago should come as no surprise to anyone who knows her or who knows her story. Berlin did not do competitive gymnastics again after her car accident in 2001 and was not expected to do anything more than dance-throughs when she walked on to the UCLA team in 2006. Yet, by the end of her senior year, she had competed in every single meet during her career and became a four-time All-American.
