April 26, 2014 | Women's Water Polo

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Second seeded UCLA advanced to the MPSF Women's Water Polo Tournament championship match with a 10-7 semifinal victory over Arizona State Saturday at USC's Uytensu Aquatics Center.

Sophomore Rachel Fattal led the Bruins' offense with four goals and goalkeeper Sami Hill anchored the defense with 11 saves, as UCLA (25-3) advanced to its first conference championship final since 2012. Arizona State, which upset third-seeded USC Friday in sudden-victory overtime, fell to 15-9.

The Bruins took a precarious 2-1 first quarter lead before distancing from the Sun Devils with four goals in the second period. Senior Becca Dorst got the scoring started with a 2-meter goal, which was followed by a power play goal from Kodi Hill. At 1:29, Arizona State scored its first goal and the quarter ended with the Bruins ahead by one.

Four unanswered goals in the second quarter – two by Fattal and two by junior Emily Donohoe – enabled the Bruins to build a 6-1 lead. The Sun Devils scored late in the period and went into halftime trailing, 6-2.

The Sun Devils opened the third quarter with a quick goal and trailed 6-3 before Fattal answered to make it 7-3. After another goal by ASU, UCLA sophomore Alys Williams scored to make it 8-4. Late in the quarter, sophomore Kodi Hill blocked an ASU shot attempt during a power play, and Fattal scored on the ensuing possession to give the Bruins a 9-4 lead entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Bruins' Alexa Tielmann scored a quick goal on a power play to give UCLA a 10-4 lead. Arizona State then scored the next three goals, but time ran out and the Bruins had advanced.
