September 08, 2014 | Men's Water Polo

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 4-0 on the year with a 13-5 win at No. 10 UC San Diego on Sunday evening in the final game of the Triton Invitational. Junior Danny McClintick, senior Cristiano Mirarchi, senior Chris Fahlsing and redshirt freshman Maxwell Irving each scored two goals to lead the Bruins.

The Bruins and the Tritons battled to a 2-2 tie in the first period. Redshirt freshman Jack Grover scored the first goal of the game on a power play (6:34) and then senior Daniel Lenhart made it 2-0 with a goal at the 5:53 mark. UCSD's Dan Lorch scored back-to-back goals (5:04 and 3:23) to end the scoring at 2-2 through one period.

UCLA dominated the second period to outscore UCSD 5-1. Irving scored his first goal to give UCLA a 3-2 (6:32). But the lead was shortlived as Chase Cockerill tied it at 3-3 with a power play goal (5:58). But the Bruins would score the last four goals of the second to take a 7-3 lead at the break. McClintick's first goal put UCLA up 4-3 (5:28) and then sophomore Chancellor Ramirez scored his first of the season to push the lead to 5-3 (4:45). McClintick's second goal put the Bruins up 6-3 (3:15) and Fahlsing ended the first half scoring with just 0:11 left to make it 7-3.

The third period was a defensive affair with both teams only scoring one goal. Josh Stiling trimmed UCLA's lead to 7-4 (7:26) but Fahlsing would push the lead back to four to end the third period scoring at 3:33 to give the Bruins an 8-4 edge heading into the fourth.

The fourth period was again dominated by the Bruins as they outscored the Tritons 5-1 in the final frame. Mirarchi scored back-to-back goals (5:45, 4:56) to build the lead to 10-4. Freshman Alex Roelse pushed the lead to 11-4 with 2:32 left in the game. David Higginson closed the gap to 11-5 with a power play strike with 1:20 to go, but the Bruins scored the final two goals of the game. Irving tabbed his second with 0:52 left and junior Anthony Daboub scored his first of the year with 0:08 left on the clock to proved the 13-5 final.

The Bruins were 1-for-6 on power plays while the Tritons were 2-for-11 while neither team attempted a penalty shot.

Sophomore Garrett Danner made the start in the cage for UCLA and played the entire contest, registering seven saves. Cameron Ravanbach played the entire game in goal for UCSD and was credited with 13 saves.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 when they host the UCLA Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins open with the first game of the day at 8:00 a.m. against No. 18 Whittier, which narrowly missed an upset today of No. 9 Pepperdine, 9-8.
