With Friday's dual match tied at 3-3, the contest came down to court No. 6, where UCLA's Terri Fleming and Pepperdine's Matea Cutura played a grueling, three-set match to decide the outcome. Both players were broken multiple times in the deciding set, however it was the Bruin freshman who struck when it mattered most, as Cutura could not hold serve to force a tiebreaker, resulting in Fleming taking a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory to give her team the dramatic 4-3 victory.
UCLA (8-2) actually needed to take the final two matches to pull off the victory, as prior to Fleming's match-clinching win, senior Chanelle Van Nguyen notched a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Laura Gulbe at court No. 2 to tie the score at 3-3.
UCLA's other singles winners on the day were Kyle McPhillips (court No. 3) and Catherine Harrison (court No. 4), as both players won in straight sets at their respective courts.
UCLA needed to win four singles matches after the Waves (4-3) got out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point with victories at court Nos. 2 and 3.
UCLA's next match will be against No. 4 USC on Wednesday, March 4 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Doubles will begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by singles at 3:00 p.m. That match will be carried live by the Pac-12 Networks.
