LOS ANGELES -- UCLA opened the 2015-16 season with an impressive 73-58 win over St. John's (0-1) on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion. Sophomore guard Jordin Canada scored a game-high 23 points, which was the second-most of her young career. It marked the Bruins' seventh-straight win, dating back to last season's WNIT Championship run.

The Bruins and the Red Storm battled to a 12-12 tie in a defensive-minded first period. Canada led all scorers in the first quarter with six points.

UCLA scored the first 15 points of the second period to build a commanding 27-12 lead after a layup by Canada (5:15). The Bruins won the quarter 24-12 to take a 36-24 lead at the break. Canada added nine points in the second to lead all scorers with 15 at the half.

The Bruins led by as many as 21 points (59-38) in the third after a layup by sophomore Kelli Hayes with 1:06 to go. Canada had eight more points in the period and Hayes and senior guard Nirra Fields each scored six.

St. John's won the fourth quarter 18-12 but never got closer than 14 points (68-54) the rest of the way. Fields led the Bruins in the fourth with four points.

For the game, Fields (14 points) and senior forward Kacy Swain (10 points, eight rebounds) joined Canada in double-figure scoring. Sophomore Monique Billings had a personal-best 14 rebounds to go with seven points, two blocks and two assists. Hayes finished with six points and freshman Kennedy Burke had five points, five rebounds and three steals in her collegiate debut.

The Bruins return to action on Friday, Nov. 20 when they host James Madison at 7:00 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
