
No. 1 UCLA Defeats No. 6 UCSB, 9-4

LOS ANGELES -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 23-0 on the year and 7-0 in the MPSF with a 9-4 win over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (14-9, 3-5) on Friday night under the lights at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The win marked the Bruins' 26th-straight victory, which extends the second-longest winning streak in school history. The all-time record is 50, which was established from 1964-68.
The Bruins improved to 100-17-1 all-time against UCSB, the most wins against any opponent for UCLA. The Bruins also extended their winning streak in MPSF regular season games to 22, which has already shattered the previous best of 13 (2003-05). The last time UCLA lost a league game was an 8-6 setback at Stanford on Oct. 19, 2013.
UCLA was led by juniors Ryder Roberts and Patrick Fellner, who each scored two goals. Junior Garrett Danner registered 14 saves in the cage for the Bruins.
Junior Gordon Marshall scored the first goal of the game from two meters off a feed from Roberts (5:55). Reed Cotterill tied it at 1-1 with a power play goal for the Gauchos (4:19). Roberts took a feed from senior Anthony Daboub in the front court to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead at the end of the first (3:42).
The Bruins dominated the second period, winning 5-1, to build a 7-2 lead by halftime. UCLA scored six unanswered goals by six different players. Junior Chancellor Ramirez made it 3-1 from the front court off a pass from Daboub (6:54). Then sophomore Alex Roelse added a counter score off his own steal (6:28). Fellner then found the back of the net on a 6-on-5 opportunity (3:50) to make it 5-1. Sophomore Max Irving took a pass from Roelse and scored from the front court (3:16). Then Daboub got in on the scoring with another assist going to Roberts and the Bruins built their largest lead of the game at 7-1 (1:49). UCSB ended the scoring in the second with a power play goal by Derek Shoemaker (1:11).
The Gauchos won the third period, 1-0, to trim the lead to 7-3. The only score of the period was a penalty shot by Shane Hauschild (5:09).
UCLA opened the scoring in the fourth with a counter attack goal from Fellner (4:40), his second score of the game. Then Roberts converted a penalty shot (3:56) for his second score to push the lead to 9-3. The Gauchos got the game's final goal on a 6-on-4 opportunity with Josh Jordan capitalizing (2:09) to provide the 9-4 final.
Danner played entire game in the cage for UCLA and added three steals to go with his 14 saves. Chris Whitelegge played the entire match in goal for the Gauchos, surrendering nine goals while making nine stops.
UCLA went 2-for-7 on power plays while the Gauchos went 3-for-7. Both teams went 1-for-1 on penalty shots.
The Bruins return to action on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to No. 8 Long Beach State (9-12, 1-5).
