
UCLA Advances to NCAA Title Game

LOS ANGELES -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins advanced to the 2015 NCAA Championship game with a 17-4 semifinal win over No. 5 UC San Diego (15-14) at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins improved to 29-0 on the year, winning their 32nd-straight game, which extends the second-longest winning streak in school history. The all-time record is 50, which was established from 1964-68.
Sophomore Alex Roelse led the Bruins with four goals while junior goalkeeper Garrett Danner registered 19 saves and three steals for UCLA.
Junior Ryder Roberts scored first on a counter (5:55) and junior Patrick Fellner scored on a skipper to put UCLA up 2-0 (5:12). Tyler Mancuso ended the scoring in the first period with a goal with 1:29 remaining to cut the Bruins' lead to 2-1.
Senior Anthony Daboub scored the first goal of the second period (7:33) to put UCLA up 3-1. Senior Daniel McClintick then made it 4-1 with a goal from the front court (6:49). Roelse then grabbed a rebound off a saved shot by sophomore Max Irving and tipped it in for a 5-1 lead (4:50). Roelse then wound up on the giving end as he fed Irving for a power play strike to make it 6-1 (4:20). McClintick scored his second of the game on another 6-on-5 opportunity to make it 7-1 (3:17). Chase Cockerill put an end to five straight goals by UCLA with a goal at even strength to cut it to 7-2 (1:35). Irving then set up Fellner for his second score on a power play (0:46) to push the lead to 8-2. Junior Chancellor Ramirez scored his first of the game off a feed from Roelse to end the scoring in the second (0:04) with the Bruins leading 9-2 at the break.
Sophomore Matt Farmer opened the scoring in the third with a goal at two meters off a sweet feed from Roelse (6:55). Roelse then scored his second of the game on a power play to push the lead to 11-2 (5:59) with the assist going to Fellner. Roelse then completed a hat trick with a catch and shoot from five meters out off a pass from sophomore Jack Grover (5:11) to score the Bruins' fifth straight goal. McClintick then completed his hat trick to make it 13-2 (4:11). Irving then scored his second of the game on a powerful skip shot (2:56) off a feed from redshirt freshman Warren Snyder. Tiki Toplak scored a rebound goal to put an end to the Bruins' seven straight goals to cut it to 14-3 (1:29), ending the scoring in the third.
Roelse scored his fourth to open the scoring in the fourth, extending the lead to 15-3 (7:16). Cockerill scored his second of the game to make it 15-4 (6:56). Matt Farmer scored his second of the game off a feed from redshirt freshman Austin Rone to put UCLA up 16-4 (4:52). Freshman Spencer Farrar became the ninth different Bruin to score when he found the back of the net on a power play shot from a pass from Snyder to end the scoring at 17-4 (1:26).
Jack Turner was credited with two saves and two steals for the Tritons while giving up 15 goals in the first 26:48. Sam Thompson played the final 5:12 and made two stops while surrendering two goals. Freshman Alex Wolf played the fourth quarter for UCLA and made six saves while allowing one goal.
UCLA went 5-for-9 on power plays while the Tritons were 1-for-5. Neither team attempted a penalty shot.
The Bruins will face No. 3 USC in the title game tomorrow at 6:12 p.m. The Trojans defeated No. 2 California 9-6 in the second semifinal.
