UCLA Finishes Sweep of Michigan State with 4-1 Rain-Shortened Win
March 01, 2015 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 8 UCLA Bruins completed the three-game sweep of Michigan State with a 4-1 victory in a rain-shortened game on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game was called after five innings due to inclement weather. The win marks the fifth in a row for the Bruins and the seventh consecutive home victory to begin the season.
Sophomore Grant Dyer (2-0) earned the victory in relief, allowing one run over two innings. Anthony Misiewicz (1-1) got the loss after allowing four runs in two and a third innings.
The UCLA offense struck early in this afternoon's game, getting three runs on the board in the first inning before the rain started to fall. In total, the Bruins brought eight batters to the plate, beginning with Kevin Kramer who legged out an infield single to lead off the game. Luke Persico then brought Kramer home with a line drive double into the right-field corner. After Ty Moore added a single, Chris Keck drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Then, the Bruins added their third run on an error by the Spartan shortstop that allowed Moore to come around from second.
Two innings later, the Bruins added a fourth run on an RBI double from freshman Sean Bouchard. After Keck led off the inning with a double, Bouchard brought him home two batters later with a double of his own that snuck just inside of third base.
Following Bouchard's double, play was suspended as the rain was pouring down from the sky. The delay lasted an hour and 40 minutes in total, leaving both teams stranded in the dugout, forced to wait it out.
Eventually it was determined that play could resume and the game picked back up in the bottom of the third inning.
Michigan State was able to get on the board for the first time in the top of the fourth; however, that would mark the final tally of the game for the Spartans.
Throughout the fourth and fifth inning the rain continued to fall from the sky and the game was eventually called after five frames, the minimum amount to qualify as an official game.
UCLA will look to continue their win streak on Tuesday, March 3 when they take on the CSUN Matadors at 6:00pm PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Tuesday's contest can be heard live on uclabruins.com.
Notes: Ty Moore (1-for-2, 1 run) extended his hit streak to 11 games with a single in the first inning. As a team the Bruins are hitting .323, led by Ty Moore (.548), Brett Stephens (.471) and Kevin Kramer (.455). The 7-0 start at home this season is the best home record to begin the season since 2010 (15-0).
