UCLA Drops First Home Game of the Season, 6-0, to Vanderbilt

March 07, 2015 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 6 UCLA Bruins dropped their first home game of the season, 6-0, to No. 1 Vanderbilt, in front of 2,204 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday night.

Commodores' starter Carson Fulmer (3-0) got the win, throwing 6.1 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. Junior James Kaprielian (3-1) received the loss for UCLA, allowing four runs and striking out a season-high nine batters over 5.1 innings.

Vanderbilt (11-2) jumped out to an early lead on the Bruins, putting two runs up in the top of the first inning. A walk and two singles from the first three batters put the initial run on the board before a throwing error brought the second run home to put the Commodores on top 2-0.

Despite struggling in the first inning, Kaprielian settled into a groove beginning in the second, recording seven out of the next nine outs via strikeout. From one out in the third to two outs in the fourth, the Preseason All-American struck out four Commodores in a row. The junior right-hander was able to keep the Bruins close while the offense attempted to solve Vanderbilt's Fulmer.

The best chance for UCLA (11-2) came in the bottom of the second inning. Down 2-0 at the time, UCLA loaded the bases with two outs for shortstop Kevin Kramer. The junior worked a 2-2 count, but was called out on strikes to end the threat.

The Commodores would eventually add to their lead with a solo home run from Rhett Wiseman in the fifth inning. One inning later, Vanderbilt plated two more runs on a double from Karl Ellison and a sacrifice-fly from Tyler Campbell, extending the lead to 5-0.

After Vanderbilt brought in their sixth run in the seventh inning, freshman Matt Trask was brought on in relief. Trask and Moises Ceja, making his first appearance of the season, combined to pitch a scoreless 2.1 innings to finish out the game. Trask rung up a career-high three batters, but UCLA was unable to come back, falling 6-0.

The Bruins will be back in action tomorrow night against No. 7 TCU at 6:00pm PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Tomorrow's game can be heard live at uclabruins.com.

Notes: Junior outfielder Ty Moore (1-for-3) has recorded a hit in 12 of 13 games so far this season. With nine strikeouts tonight, James Kaprielian is 10 away from 200 career strikeouts. Freshman Matt Trask threw a career-high 1.1 innings. UCLA has had two win-streaks of 5 or more games this season.
