Top-ranked Bruins Fall to No. 2 Cardinal, 8-7

April 11, 2015 | Women's Water Polo

The No.1-ranked UCLA women's water polo team lost 8-7 in an epic MPSF showdown Saturday at No. 2 Stanford.

The Cardinal (19-1, 4-0) scored three times in the first and fourth quarters, then held on as the Bruins (20-2, 4-1) came up short on a pair of rallies.

Stanford raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by veterans Ashley Grossman, Kiley Neushul and Maggie Steffens. A goal by UCLA senior Emily Donohoe cut the score to 3-1 to end the period.

The Cardinal quickly answered with a goal early in the second period from Gurpreet Sohi. Undeterred, the Bruins responded with goals from juniors Charlotte Pratt and Rachel Fattal. The half ended with Stanford ahead, 4-3.

Kiley Neushul opened the third quarter with a goal to give the Cardinal a 5-3 advantage, before Donohoe scored at 0:01 to cut the Cardinal's lead to 5-4 entering the fourth.

A pair of goals at 7:35 and 5:49 by Jamie Neushul gave the Cardinal a 7-4 lead, before Fattal scored 14 seconds later to put the Bruins down by just two, 7-5. Stanford answered with a goal from Jordan Raney at 5:10, and the Bruins mounted one more comeback.

Donohoe scored her third goal at 4:17 and Pratt her second a minute later to narrow the gap to 8-7. The Bruins could not score in the final minutes, but withstood a pair of power play opportunities by the Cardinal.
