April 15, 2015 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The third-ranked UCLA Bruins moved their record to 6-0 in midweek contests, defeating the Cal State Fullerton Titans, 7-2, on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins have now won 13 of their last 15 games overall.
In the midst of a carousel of pitching changes, Cody Poteet (3-1) earned the victory for the Bruins. The UCLA right-hander struck out three and allowed no runs on no hits in three innings. Cal State Fullerton starter, Tyler Peitzmeier (0-1), earned the loss in his first start of the season, allowing four runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. In total, UCLA used six different pitchers, while Cal State Fullerton used five.
The Bruins reached the double-digit hit mark for the 16th time this season, recording 10 hits in the victory. Six different players drove in runs and Ty Moore (2-for-4, R) and Brett Urabe (2-for-4, 2B, R, RBI) each had multi-hit games to aid the effort.
UCLA (26-7) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to put the first two runs on the board in tonight's contest. Moore and Chris Keck began the inning with back-to-back singles, eventually both coming around to score. Moore was brought in on an RBI-groundout by Justin Hazard and Keck came in on a Trent Chatterton RBI-single.
Up by two, the Bruins backed up their two-run second with a two-run third to go up 4-0 on Cal State Fullerton. Kramer walked to begin the inning and was followed with a double down the left field line by Brett Urabe, putting runners on second and third with no outs. The next batter, Luke Persico, then brought Kramer home on an RBI-ground out. Two batters later, it was a fielder's choice off of the bat of Keck that eventually brought Urabe home to put UCLA up by four.
In the top of the sixth inning, Cal State Fullerton (19-16) cut the lead in half with a two-run inning of its own. A Tyler Stieb double, the Titans first hit of the game, and a walk to Tristan Hildebrandt put two men on base for pinch-hitter Jerrod Bravo. The substitute made the most of his chance by singling to right field to bring both men in to score.
UCLA then went on to score one run in sixth, seventh and eighth innings to eventually move the final score to 7-2.
RBI-singles from Brett Stephens in the seventh and Brett Urabe in the eighth, paired with a bases loaded wild pitch that brought in Sean Bouchard, accounted for the final trio of runs.
UCLA will be back in action on Thursday, April 16, when they host the California Golden Bears for a three-game Pac-12 Conference series. Thursday's game is set for 7:00pm PT and will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks. Fans can also listen to the weekend's games via live audio on uclabruins.com.
