LOS ANGELES – Ty Moore and Trent Chatterton each went deep to help UCLA claim the midweek victory, 10-2, over Pepperdine on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins finish the season series undefeated against the Waves, going 2-0.
The Bruins scored in six of eight innings at the plate and reached the double-digit hit mark for the 23rd time, totaling 11 hits. UCLA was led by Trent Chatterton (2-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI), Ty Moore (2-for-3, 2B, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI) and Luke Persico (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI, 2 SB).
Cody Poteet (4-1), in pre-determined fashion, earned the win after allowing no runs on zero hits in three innings. Nick Wojtysiak (0-1) garnered the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in one inning of work.
UCLA (34-11) jumped on the Waves early, putting two runs up in the opening frame. With one out, Sean Bouchard walked and came all the way around to score on Moore's RBI-double in the next at-bat. Then, after Moore advanced to third on a balk, Persico laced a single to right field to give the Bruins the 2-0 edge.
Moore struck again for UCLA in the second inning, launching a three-run home run to extend the lead to five. All coming with two outs, back-to-back walks to Kevin Kramer and Bouchard set the table for Moore. The Bruin left fielder proceeded to stroke the second pitch of the at-bat deep into the early evening, hitting the Gifford Hitting Facility beyond the right field fence to go up, 5-0.
The Bruins continued to put pressure on Pepperdine in the third inning, scoring for the third consecutive frame. Walks to Chris Keck and Brett Stephens, along with a single from Darrell Miller Jr., loaded the bases with no outs. Chatterton proceeded to ground into a double play, but Keck came into score on the play to push the UCLA lead to six runs.
In the fourth inning, Pepperdine (24-22) finally got on the score sheet to pull within five. A double from Brandon Caruso and a single from Kolten Yamaguchi led to the scoring sacrifice-fly off of the bat of Manny Jefferson to plate the Waves' first run.
Yamaguchi added an RBI-single in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the UCLA lead to four. However, Chatterton answered with a solo home run in the bottom half to re-gain the five-run edge.
The Bruins began to really pull away in the seventh inning, tacking on two more runs to the already comfortable lead. With two outs, Stephens and Chatterton delivered back-to-back RBI-singles to extend the advantage to 9-2.
The barrage continued as UCLA reached the double-digit run mark for the 11th time this season thanks to an eighth inning RBI-single by Persico to reach the final count, 10-2.
UCLA will head on the road to continue Pac-12 Conference play this weekend against the Arizona State Sun Devils. The three-game weekend series is set to begin Friday, May 8 at 6:30pm PT. All three games can be heard live on uclabruins.com.
