No. 1 UCLA Defeats CMS 12-4

LOS ANGELES -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 10-0 on the year with a 12-4 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (4-7) on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.

Junior Ryder Roberts and freshman Spencer Farrar each had a hat trick in the win for the Bruins.

UCLA dominated the first period, pitching a shutout while putting up four goals on the board. Junior Joey Fuentes opened the scoring with a power play goal (7:24) followed by counter attack scores from Farrar (5:51) and junior Chancellor Ramirez (3:38). Roberts ended the scoring in the first with a power play goal (1:56) to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead.

The second period was dominated by the defenses as only two Bruin goals were scored. Farrar scored on a counter (5:35) and Roberts on a 6-on-5 opportunity (2:42) as UCLA held a 6-0 lead at the break.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps opened the scoring in the third with a power play goal by Adam Hilborn (7:45). But UCLA responded with back-to-back goals from sophomore James Robinson (7:13) and Farrar (5:05) to push the lead to 8-1. After goals by CMS's Eric Bakar (4:26) and Peter Tilton (2:12) cut the lead to 8-3, redshirt freshman Austin Rone ended the scoring with an exclusion goal (1:38) to lead 9-3 at the end of three.

Hilborn scored his second power play goal of the match to cut the lead to 9-4 (5:51) to open the scoring in the fourth. But UCLA scored the final three goals of the period to provide the 12-4 final. Roberts then completed his hat trick (5:26) and junior Patrick Fellner (5:03) and redshirt freshman David Stiling (1:07) each scored their first of the match to end the scoring.

Junior Garrett Danner started in goal for UCLA and played the first half, registering six stops while pitching a shutout. Freshman Alex Wolf played the third period and made four saves while allowing three goals. Redshirt freshman Aleksandar Ruzic played the fourth in goal for the Bruins and had three saves while surrendering one goal. Rye Newman played the entire match in the cage for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and had nine saves.

UCLA went 4-for-8 on power plays while CMS went 3-for-5. Neither team attempted a penalty shot.
