LOS ANGELES -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 11-0 on the year with a 20-1 win over Chapman (3-6) on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
Sophomore Max Irving tied his career-high with four goals to lead four Bruins with hat tricks in the win. Junior Patrick Woepse had three goals as did junior Patrick Fellner and sophomore Alex Roelse.
UCLA jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back. The Bruins led 7-0 at the end of the first period. Roelse opened the scoring with a penalty goal (7:37) and scored his second on the next possession (6:52). Freshman Spencer Farrar scored both of his goals in the first period (5:10, 3:06) and Irving added two as well (2:24, 1:43). Redshirt freshman James Robinson was the fourth Bruin to score in the opening stanza (4:39).
The Bruins also dominated the second period, 4-0, to build an 11-0 advantage by halftime. Woepse scored his first of the match to open the scoring in the second with a power play goal (7:22). Irving then completed his hat trick (6:27) and Fellner scored his first (5:02). Roelse then completed his hat trick (3:28) to end the scoring in the second period.
Another shutout period followed for the Bruins in the third as UCLA would score three more to build a 14-0 lead. Fellner opened the scoring with a goal from the front court (7:23) and then completed his hat trick with another front court strike (5:47). Irving scored his fourth (1:27) to end the scoring in the third quarter.
The Bruins made it 15-0 with a second goal from Woepse, this one off a nice feed from redshirt freshman Austin Rone to start the fourth (7:49). Brady Hoskins broke through for the Panthers with a power play goal (6:01) to make it 15-1. But UCLA reeled off five more goals to win the match 20-1. Robinson added his second (4:41) and then junior Joey Fuentes hit Woepse at set, who scored his third (3:58) as UCLA led 17-1. That set up junior Alec Zwaneveld's goal of the match, a back-hander at two meters that found the back of the cage (3:01). Fuentes then scored a power play goal (2:04) and Zwaneveld scored from two meters (1:16) to end the scoring.
Freshman Alex Wolf started in the cage and played the first half, picking up six saves while pitching a shutout. He also had one assist. Redshirt freshman Aleksandar Ruzic played the third in goal for the Bruins and had three saves while pitching a shutout. He was credited with one steal. Redshirt freshman Elliot Ordway tended goal in the fourth, allowing one goal on a 5-on-6 situation. Ian Decker got the start for Chapman and made four saves while allowing seven goals in the first. Nigel Bress played the final three periods, allowing 13 goals while making two saves.
UCLA went 2-for-5 on power plays while Chapman went 1-for-5. The Bruins were 1-for-1 on penalty shots while the Panthers didn't attempt one.
