SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- UCLA junior Mackenzie McDonald was named Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for action during the week of Jan. 25-31, the conference announced Monday.
In his first outing of the spring season, McDonald got off to a strong start when he rallied to defeat 28th-ranked Austin Smith of Georgia in the 2016 Pac-12/SEC Challenge. After dropping the first set, 2-6, McDonald battled back to win the second, 6-4. The junior took the three-setter on an ace serve and clinched the match for UCLA.
In doubles play, McDonald and partner Martin Redlicki dominated the No. 10 pair in the country in Georgia's Smith and Ben Wagland, 6-1. It is McDonald's second-career weekly accolade and the 26th all-time for the Bruins.
