SAN GABRIEL, Calif. - Incoming freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara birdied his final four holes to win the CIF State Championship last Wednesday (June 1). Yoshihara shot a 6-under 65 at the San Gabriel Valley Country Club, and as a result was named the Orange County Register Boys Golfer of the Year.

In seven postseason rounds in his senior season at Woodbridge High School (Irvine, Calif.), Yoshihara never posted a round worse than par and finished his championship run with a cumulative score of -15. He placed T-4 at the SCGA So Cal Championships, which qualified him for the CIF State Championship. His total of 65 was the lowest score at CIF State since 2006 (Rickie Fowler, 64). Yoshihara also helped Woodbridge to the CIF-Southern Section South Coast Team Regional.

Yoshihara is a two-time Rolex All-American, earning Honorable Mention in 2015 and Second Team in 2014. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur this summer and was also a participant at the '15 Wyndham Cup. This year, he shot a 62 at Oak Creek Golf Club to set a course record.

Yoshihara, who was born in Japan and moved to the United States five years ago, started playing golf at the age of two and was a top five ranked golfer in Japan in the sixth grade.
