DALY CITY, Calif. - UCLA alum Gregor Main qualified for the U.S. Open on Monday during sectional qualifying, shooting a 66 on The Olympic Club Ocean Course and a 68 at The Lake Merced Golf Club to post a 9-under 134.

Main, who had 10 birdies and just one bogey in his 36 holes, earned one of six spots available among the 100 participants at one of 10 sectional qualifiers on Monday. The Bruin alum will now travel across the country to Oakmont, Pa. and Oakmont Country Club for next week's U.S. Open (June 16-19), his first-ever major tournament appearance.

A three-year letterwinner at UCLA from 2009-2011, Main was a three-time GCAA All-American (Third Team as a junior and freshman, Honorable Mention as a sophomore) and three-time All-Pac-10 selection (First Team as a junior, Second Team as a sophomore and freshman, Pac-10 Freshman of the Year). In 36 starts, he posted 10 Top 10s, as well as a win at the Del Walker Invitational in his junior campaign. 

Since turning pro following his junior season, Main has spent time on the European Challenge Tour, making eight starts and four cuts in 2014, including a pair of Top 20 finishes. He has made six starts on the Web.com Tour since 2012 and four starts on the PGA TOUR.

Main will be one of two Bruin alums in the field at next week's U.S. Open. Kevin Chappell (2005-2008) earned his spot in the field by virtue of his Top 60 position in the Official World Golf Rankings. He currently ranks 35th in the OWGR after starting 2016 at 105th on the list, as he is recording his best year on the PGA TOUR. 

In 17 events, Chappell has three second-place finishes and five Top 10s, having earned just under $3 million this season and ranking eighth in the FedEx Cup standings. He placed second at last month's THE PLAYERS Championship, the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and the RSM Classic last November.

The 2008 Jack Nicklaus Award winner (Collegiate Player of the Year), '08 Arnold Palmer Award winner (individual medalist at NCAA Championships) and 2008 Pac-10 Golfer of the Year, Chappell was a three-time All-American, winning five times and setting the new school, 54-hole individual record as a senior. He finished his collegiate career by helping the Bruins to their second National Championship.

Chappell has made the cut in each of his four previous U.S. Opens, placing T-3 in 2011, T-10 in 2012, T-32 in 2013 and T-46 last year.
