Gymnastics
Incoming freshman Madison Kocian recorded the highest uneven bars score of the competition so far, 15.866, to qualify for the uneven bars finals. Kocian's mark helped Team USA place first in the qualifying round with a score of 185.238, nearly 10 full points ahead of second-place China, with one more subdivision to go.

Team USA will go for gold in the team finals on Tuesday. Kocian will compete for the uneven bars title on Aug. 14.

Beach Volleyball
In their opening match of pool play, UCLA alum Lauren Fendrick, with partner Brooke Sweat, dropped a three-set decision to Poland's Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek. Fendrick and Sweat won the first set, 21-14, but would end up dropping the second (21-13) and third (15-7). Fendrick totaled 14 kills, five blocks and two aces. Next up for Fendrick and Sweat is the top-ranked Olympic team, Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes of Brazil.

Women's Rugby
USA Rugby, captained by UCLA alumna Kelly Griffin, advanced to the quarterfinals after a 12-12 draw with No. 1 seed Australia. After Australia took a 5-0 lead, Jessica Javelet scored twice to give the U.S. a 12-5 advantage with three minutes to play. However, Australia scored in the final seconds to salvage a tie. The draw gave the U.S. a 1-1-1 record in pool play, which put the team in the quarterfinals against New Zealand. The Americans put up a good fight in the quarterfinals but lost 5-0 to drop out of medal contention.

Men's Tennis
In the first round of doubles play, Jean-Julien Rojer and partner Robin Haase of the Netherlands fell in straight sets to sixth-seeded Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez, 6-4, 6-4.  

Men's Volleyball
John Speraw's USA Men's Volleyball team opened pool play with a 0-3 setback against Canada on Sunday afternoon. Next up for the USA will be pool matches against 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Italy on Tuesday, and then a Thursday match versus the 2012 silver medalists Brazil.
