UCLA women's soccer team manager Sophie Zollman will document life on the road with the 2016 Bruins with regular blog posts throughout the season.
Hi, soccer fans! It's Sophie back to fill you in on our road trip to College Station last weekend to face Texas A&M.
This trip, we were super excited to be reunited with our goalkeeper coach Aline Reis, who just arrived back in the United States last week after playing for the Brazilian women's soccer team at the Olympics!
We left UCLA at 6am on Thursday morning and headed straight to the airport. After a full day of travel, flying into Dallas and then to College Station, we were all super-exhausted! Before we could head to the hotel though, we stopped by Ellis Field to check out the stadium we would be playing in the next day and have a quick training session. After training and rolling out, we headed to a make-your-own stir-fry place in College Station before going back to the hotel and turning in for the night.
The next day, we got the chance to sleep in and relax a bit before game-time that evening. When we returned to the stadium this time, however, the vibe had completely changed. The stands were packed full of fans as we were about to play in front of a sold-out crowd. Capacity was so maxed out that it was standing-room only.
Also to add to the craziness, we ran out of the locker room and was greeted by the Texas A&M Alma mater song, which everyone, all 5,000+ fans, were singing in unison. The school spirit only intensified as the game began, and it was definitely something we had to get used to.
In the end though, we were able to come up victorious for our second victory of the season. Chloe Castaneda scored her first UCLA goal with an amazing shot from just outside the box in the 82nd minute! It couldn't have been a better way to take down one of the top teams in the nation.
The next day, the players had a recovery session in the pool before heading off to Houston, about a two-hour drive from the airport. Despite running super late, we were able to barely make our flight and get back to Westwood Saturday evening, the day before our home match against Florida.
Our first official road trip was definitely a success. Make sure to tune in this Friday at 8pm when we face #13 Penn State at Drake Stadium!
