Senior forward Darian Jenkins of the UCLA women's soccer team will miss the remainder of the 2016 season after suffering a fibula fracture of her left lower leg on Oct. 2.
"Obviously the injury to Darian is devastating, not only to her, but to the program and to Athletics," UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell said. "She's such a big part of UCLA in so many ways. She's involved in a lot of things off the field, she's a captain for our team, and she's just a great leader and great teammate."
Jenkins suffered the injury in the 72nd minute of the Bruins' 3-2 victory at Oregon and was taken to a local hospital for surgery that evening. She returned to Los Angeles on Monday.
"Big picture, we know Darian is going to be back fit and strong and playing tremendous soccer as she was when she got injured," Cromwell said. "It is hard for us to swallow because it's her senior year, and she won't be able to be on the field, but I know as a captain Darian is still going to lead us, and she's still going to be a huge influence on this team in a variety of ways. We won't have the impact of her scoring goals, but we will have the impact of her leadership."
Going into Sunday's game Jenkins was leading the Pac-12 in goals (7), points (17) and game-winning goals (5). She started all 11 games for the Bruins this season and recorded her first career hat trick in the first half of the season opener. The 2013 NSCAA All-American and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year will finish her Bruin career with 29 goals, 12 assists and 70 points, along with 14 game-winning goals, which rank fifth in UCLA history.
"We're all sad that she's going to miss the rest of the season, but she has great things ahead of her," Cromwell stated. "Any team in the pro league would be lucky to have her."
