Three Bruins Head to Oracle/ITA Masters

MALIBU, Calif. – Three UCLA tennis players hit the courts this week for the 2016 Oracle/ITA Masters event. Gage Brymer and Martin Redlicki will represent the Bruin men, while Ena Shibahara represents the Bruin women. The four-day event runs from October 13-16 at the Malibu Racquet Club and at Pepperdine University.
At last week's 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships, Redlicki took down Julius Tverijonas of George Washington in straight sets in his opening-round match. The Bruin nearly upset second-seeded Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia in the round of 16, as he took the first set 6-3. After Kwiatkowski battled back to win the second set in a tiebreaker, he kept the momentum going into the third set, holding on to post a 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-5 win over Redlicki. On the other side of the draw, Brymer registered a three-set winner over Diogo Rocha (University of Denver) in the first round. Also suffering a round of 16 loss, Brymer fell in straight sets to sixth-seeded Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest.
In the first round on Thursday, eighth-seeded Redlicki faces Jaime Barajas (Utah State) at 12 p.m., while seventh-seeded Brymer squares off with Nathan Boneil (Portland State) at 2 p.m. Both matches take place at Pepperdine University.
On the women's side, Shibahara is fresh off an outstanding performance at the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships last week. The freshman advanced from pre-qualification to the main draw, winning 10 matches en route to the championship final. Ranked No. 2 in the preseason Oracle ITA Division I Women's National Newcomer/Freshmen Rankings, the Bruin defeated three ranked players in qualification action and took down four top-30 players in the main draw. Shibahara fell in the championship final to third-ranked Francesca Di Lorenzo of Ohio State.
Second-seeded Shibahara takes on Marine Cartier (Alabama State) at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday at Pepperdine University.
Prior to singles action on Thursday, mixed doubles kicks off at 8 a.m. Redlicki and Shibahara team up to face Cartier and Alex Chepik (Bethune-Cookman), while Brymer pairs with Sara Daavettila (UNC) to play Shreya Pasricha and Jacob Whalley (Fairleigh Dickinson).
