Freshman Ena Shibahara of the UCLA women's tennis team was voted the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Oct. 3-9.
Shibahara advanced from pre-qualification to the main draw final at the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships last week. Winning 10 matches en route to the final, Shibahara dropped only two sets. Ranked No. 2 in the preseason Oracle ITA Division I Women's National Newcomer/Freshmen Rankings, the Bruin defeated three ranked players in qualification action and took down four top-30 players in the main draw. Shibahara fell in the championship final to third-ranked Francesca Di Lorenzo of Ohio State.
This is Shibahara's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
The UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week is chosen by fans on Twitter via @UCLAAthletics. This week, Shibahara beat out men's soccer player Jose Hernandez, who scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win at San Diego State; and men's water polo player Max Irving, who scored five goals last weekend to help UCLA set a new NCAA record with 52 consecutive wins.
