LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The ninth-ranked UCLA Bruins never trailed in their exhibition game against Westmont and cruised to an 80-45 victory on Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion.
All nine Bruins that played scored at least four points and grabbed at least two rebounds as UCLA won its only exhibition game of the preseason.
A quartet of Bruins reached double figures, led by junior Jordin Canada's 15 points, five assists, five steals, four rebounds and one block. Sophomore Kennedy Burke added 14 points, five assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks while going 4-for-4 from three-point range. Senior Nicole Kornet tallied 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal while junior Monique Billings had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block.
Senior Kari Korver, who finished with seven points and four rebounds, opened the game with a three-pointer (9:40) and the Bruins were off and running. Cora Chan drained a three-pointer to cut the Bruins lead to 12-9 (5:19), but UCLA switched to a pressing defense that the Warriors couldn't handle. Four straight steals and scores, one each by Burke, Canada, Billings and sophomore Ashley Hearn, put the Bruins up 23-9 (2:15). Burke hit a three-pointer (0:52) to end the scoring in the first quarter, which UCLA ended on a 17-0 run to build a 29-9 lead at the end of the first.
Westmont scored the first five points of the second quarter to get as close as they would for the remainder of the game at 15 points (29-14). The Bruins went on a 14-4 run after that, culminating in a layup by Korver to push the lead to 25 (43-18) with 1:58 left in the period. The Warriors scored the final six points of the quarter to cut the lead to 19 by the half (43-24), winning the second period 15-14.
Burke opened the scoring in the third quarter with back-to-back three-pointers with Canada picking up assists on both. Billings hit a pair of free throws with 3:25 left in the third to push the lead to 30 at 61-31. UCLA would take a 65-37 lead into the fourth quarter after winning the third, 22-13.
Junior Kelli Hayes scored the only basket for either team in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to put the Bruins up by 30 again. Hayes finished with six points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist. Junior forward Paulina Hersler scored the last two baskets of the game to give the Bruins their largest lead of the contest and provide the 80-45 final. Hersler finished with nine points, three rebounds and two blocks.
Hearn finished with four points, two rebounds and two blocks while freshman forward Ally Rosenblum had four points, a game-high seven rebounds, two assists and one block to help UCLA outrebound Westmont 43-31.
For the game, the Bruins forced 23 turnovers and recorded 14 steals and 10 blocks to go with 20 assists on 30 made field goals. UCLA shot 46.9 percent from the floor (30-of-64) while Westmont shot 26.9 percent (14-for-52).
Kayla Sato was the only Warrior to reach double figures, scoring a game-high 21 points.
The Bruins open the season on Nov. 11 in a double-header with the UCLA men's team. Both squads will face Pacific with the men tipping at 6:00 p.m. and the women following 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men's game (approximately 8:30 p.m.).
