Bruins to Play in Collegiate Cup

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The UCLA women's water polo team hits the pool this weekend when it competes in the annual Collegiate Cup. The defending Collegiate Cup champs will be joined by some of the top teams in women's college water polo, including USC, California, Stanford, Michigan, UC Davis, and San Jose State.
Last year, the Bruins edged the Trojans 4-3 in the championship game. Mackenzie Barr netted two goals in the win, while Alex Musselman posted nine saves in the cage. Throughout the tournament, Barr led the entire field in goals and in points with 11, while teammate Ashley Zwirner notched the most assists (5). Carlee Kapana had the second highest save percentage of the weekend (.632).
The 2016 Collegiate Cup takes place Nov. 5-6 at the Avery Aquatics Center in Palo Alto, Calif. For a complete Collegiate Cup schedule, click here.
THE TEAMS
Group A
• USC (26-0, 6-0 MPSF in 2016) - Defeated Stanford 8-7 for the NCAA championship in 2016.
• USA Youth National Team - Will compete at the Youth World Championships in Australia in December.
• UC Davis A (17-13, 2-3 Big West in 2016) - Six wins over top-10 teams in 2016.
Group B
• Stanford (23-6, 4-2 MPSF in 2016) - Fell to USC in the national championship game after winning it in 2015.
• Cal (21-10, 2-4 MPSF in 2016) – Fell to UCLA in the MPSF third-place game last season. New head coach is former Bruin Coralie Simmons.
• San Jose State (18-15, 1-5 MPSF in 2016) – Fell to UCLA 13-6 last April.
Group C
• UCLA (26-5, 5-1 MPSF in 2016) - Defeated Michigan, 5-4, in the NCAA third-place game in 2016. Edged Cal, 7-5, in the MPSF third-place game.
• Michigan (30-8, 7-0 CWPA in 2016) - Won the CWPA championship in 2016 and finished fourth in the country, matching the highest finish in school history.
• USA Academy - Members of the USA Water Polo youth system.
• UC Davis B (17-13, 2-3 Big West in 2016) - Six wins over top-10 teams in 2016.
