#15 UCLA Drops Midweek Game to LBSU

February 24, 2016 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 15 UCLA Bruins dropped their opening midweek game of the season, 10-1, to Long Beach State on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Hunter Virant (0-1) started and got the loss for UCLA after allowing four runs on four hits over 1.2 innings of work. Long Beach State starter Dave Smith (1-0) earned the victory, allowing just one run on seven hits over 5.1 innings.

At the plate, the Bruins totaled seven hits, led by junior Kort Peterson (3-for-4, 2B) who notched a season-high three hits. Trent Chatterton (1-for-3, 2B, RBI) drove in the only run for UCLA on the evening.

Long Beach State (3-1) got the scoring started with a run in the top of the first to take the early lead on the Bruins. After drawing a lead-off walk, Garrett Hampson eventually made his way around to third on a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base. The Dirtbags' shortstop then came home on a sacrifice-fly, giving Long Beach State a, 1-0, advantage.

The Dirtbags wasted no time adding to their lead, tacking on three more runs in the second. Long Beach State recorded four hits in the inning, including a two-out, two-RBI double from Lucas Tancas to extend the Dirtbag lead to four.

UCLA (1-3) would scratch once in the bottom half of the third on an RBI-double from Trent Chatterton to cut the deficit to three. However, Long Beach State responded with a solo home run from Jeff Nellis in the next inning to erase the Bruin run and retake a four-run edge.

One inning later, the Dirtbags would add another run on an RBI-single from Luke Rasmussen to take a 6-1 lead over the Bruins through four. Long Beach State went on to add another four runs over the final three frames to eventually reach the final count of 10-1.

UCLA now hits the road for a three-game series at Cal Poly beginning on Friday, February 26 at 6:00pm PT. Fans can listen to all of the weekend's action live on uclabruins.com.

Notes: Dating back to last season, Kort Peterson has recorded a hit in nine-straight games … UCLA tallied a season-high seven hits … Eric Filia, Kort Peterson and Brett Stephens have reached base in all four games this season … this is the first midweek home loss since May 6, 2014 (UCLA went 5-0 in midweek home games last season).
