UCLA Track Starts Strong in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The UCLA track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Friday in the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
UCLA earned its first win of the meet when Austin Hazel leaped to a personal best in the long jump. Hazel jumped 24-4.50 to win the meet by an inch. It marked the second straight meet that Hazel jumped over 24 feet.
In the multis sophomore Steele Wasik leads the heptathlon after day one with 3,158 points. Wasik threw a personal best in the shot put and opened the meet by winning the 60m to earn 865 points.
In her second collegiate pentathlon Kendall Gustafson finished third overall with a personal best score of 3,878 points. Former UCLA All-American Tatum Souza won the event with 4,013 points.
Leon Powell clocked a season best 6.72 to win his heat and qualify for the 60m finals tomorrow. On the women's side freshman Suzie Acolatse recorded a big personal best in the 60m with a time of 7.50 to win her heat and qualify as well. In his collegiate debut in the open 400m Rai Benjamin placed ninth with a time of 47.91.
In the women's long jump Jessie Maduka finished third with a mark of 19-9.75. In the pole vault Greta Wagner improved her collegiate best to 13-2.50 to finish eighth.
The Bruins will wrap up the meet tomorrow. Wasik will start things off for UCLA at 7:30 a.m. PT with the conclusion of the heptathlon. The rest of the meet will begin at 10 a.m. PT.
