Molnar Gets Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week
March 21, 2016 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – UCLA right-handed pitcher Kyle Molnar has been named the Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 14-20, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
Molnar made one start last week, earning his second career win, in UCLA's 11-2 victory over Washington State on Sunday. The freshman set new career-highs in innings (7.0) and strikeouts (11), allowing just two runs on four hits. Molnar retired the final 13 batters he faced, including a stretch of eight consecutive strikeouts. The streak of eight strikeouts is the most any UCLA pitcher has had since David Huff struck out nine in a row on February 18, 2006 at Pacific. The closest any UCLA pitcher got during the span between Huff and Molnar was Gerrit Cole who struck out seven consecutive batters on March 12, 2010 against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. On the season, Molnar ranks second on the team in strikeouts (25), innings (26.0) and wins (2).
This is Molnar's first career Pitcher of the Week award and UCLA's 70th all-time selection.
UCLA continues Pac-12 play this weekend with a three-game road series against the Arizona Wildcats. The series begins on Thursday, March 24 at 6:00pm PT at Hi Corbett Field. Fans can listen to all three games live on uclabruins.com.
