April 18, 2016 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – UCLA right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning has been named the Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 11-17, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
Canning made one start last week, leading UCLA to a 1-0 victory on Friday at Washington. The sophomore threw a complete game shutout, allowing six hits while striking out 10 and walking just one. The complete game was his second consecutive, becoming the first UCLA player since Trevor Bauer in 2011 to throw consecutive complete games. The strikeout total was his second-highest of his career and brought his season total to 61, second-highest in the Pac-12. Canning held the Washington three and four hitters to a 0-for-8 night, with seven strikeouts. The right-hander earned his team-high fourth win for his efforts.
This is Canning's first career Pitcher of the Week award and UCLA's 71st all-time selection. Canning joins Kyle Molnar as the second Bruin to earn the honor this season.
UCLA heads to Malibu on Tuesday to take on the Pepperdine Waves at 3:00pm PT before returning home to host the Oregon Ducks for a three-game Pac-12 series this weekend.
