UCLA Falls to Utah in Game Two

April 30, 2016 | Baseball

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The UCLA Bruins fell to the Utah Utes, 9-4, on Saturday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark. The loss clinches the series win for Utah.

Grant Dyer (2-3) received the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Utah starter Dalton Carroll (4-5) pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts to earn the win.

The Bruin offense mustered just five hits, led by Kort Peterson (1-for-4, 2 RBI) who drove in a team-high two runs.

UCLA (19-21, 9-11) put two runs on the board in the first for the second-straight day and captured the early lead in the ballgame. Brett Stephens began the game by drawing a nine-pitch walk to put the lead-off runner on base. He eventually moved to third and was driven in, along with Sean Bouchard from second, on a two-out single by Peterson to give the Bruins a, 2-0, lead.

Utah (16-22, 11-6) came back with two runs of its own in the second inning to pull even at two. With a man aboard and two down, Josh Rose homered over the wall in right center field to make the score, 2-2.

The Bruins would regain their two-run lead in the top of the fifth on a Stephens' sac-fly and a Luke Persico RBI-single, but immediately surrendered the advantage in the bottom half. Five consecutive Utes recorded a hit to start the inning, bringing three runs across to give Utah a, 5-4, lead.

The Utes went on to add two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, including a two-run home run from Dallas Carroll, to seal the series win with a, 9-4, victory.

The final game of the series between UCLA and Utah begins tomorrow at 6:00pm PT at Smith's Ballpark. The game can be seen live via the Utah live stream or heard live on uclabruins.com.

Notes: Eric Filia has now reached base in 39 of 40 games this season…Luke Persico extended his hit streak to seven games…Kort Peterson has now reached base in 14 consecutive games…UCLA has scored in the first inning in four consecutive games and five of its last six…This is the 10th time this season that the Bruins have been held to five hits or less…This is the first ever series loss for UCLA to Utah.
