No. 4 UCLA Wins Two at Hermosa Beach

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. -- The fourth-ranked UCLA Bruins (14-4) extended their winning streak to seven matches with a 5-0 win over No. 13 San Francisco (14-3) on Saturday morning and a 5-0 win over No. 6 Long Beach State (9-8) in the afternoon at the 2016 USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge.
UCLA's freshman pair of Nicole McNamara and Megan McNamara, scored a pair of victories on the day. The twins defeated USF's Oluoma Okaro and Sara Staengle in three sets, 17-21, 21-13, 15-9, and then concluded the day with a straight-set victory over LBSU's Rachel Nieto and Nele Barber, 21-14, 21-18.
On court two, the Bruins' senior Kamila Tan and sophomore Ivey Schmitt took down San Francisco's Katarina Pilepic and Jurja Vlasic, 19-21, 21-11, 20-18 and completed day one with a straight-set win over the 49ers' Jenelle Hudson and Zoi Konstantopoulou, 21-16, 21-13.
UCLA's duo of sophomore Elise Zappia and freshman Izzy Carey picked up a pair of straight-set wins on the day, defeating USF's Emily Reed and Courtney Sabahi, 25-23, 21-19, and then LBSU's Kobi Pekich and Sammee Thomas, 21-14, 23-21.
On court four, UCLA's tandem of freshman Zana Muno and sophomore Reily Buechler also posted two straight-set wins over the Dons' Jessica Gaffney and Kiara McKibben, 21-17, 21-17, and the 49ers' Mykah Wilson and Ciana Wagner, 21-11, 21-17.
The Bruins' pair of senior Julie Consani and junior Laurel Weaver also recorded a pair of wins in straight sets on court five. They opened with a win over USF's Jessica Keenan and Kim Gutierrez, 21-15, 21-6 and finished with a victory over LBSU's Ariana Garner and Peyton Grahovac, 21-15, 21-12.
The Pairs Tournament started today after team competition was complete with first-round action beginning at 3:00 p.m. It will concluded tomorrow with second-round action beginning at Hermosa Beach at 9:30 a.m., followed by semifinals at 11:30 a.m. and the finals starting at 1:30 p.m.
