UCLA Splits Meet Against Rival USC

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men downed rival USC, 103-60 on Sunday at Drake Stadium. The 103 points was the most scored in the dual meet on the men's side since 2004. The women fell to the Trojans, 97-66.

UCLA freshman Stamatia Scarvelis once again started off the meet with a victory in the hammer throw. Scarvelis launched a new personal best of 200-3 to now rank sixth all-time in the UCLA record books and in the top 25 in the country.

UCLA earned big points in the women's javelin as the Bruins went 1-2-3 in the event. Junior Zaybree Haury led the trio with a best throw of 154-1. Junior Monique Van finished second at 136-8 while sophomore Kendall Gustafson was third at 132-4.

The Bruins went 1-2 in the men's shot put as senior Nicholas Scarvelis uncorked a winning throw of 66-10.75. Sophomore Braheme Days followed at 65-3.50.

Scarvelis capped off his final dual meet against rival USC with a victory in the discus. Scarvelis recorded a mark of 189-1 and was followed by freshman Dotun Ogundeji with a throw of 174-6.

UCLA also went 1-2 in the women's pole vault as freshman Greta Wagner cleared 13-3.50 and sophomore Elleyse Garrett soared over 12-11.50. In the men's pole vault junior Reed Scale led a Bruin sweep with a clearance of 16-0.75.

Senior Kylie Price got her day started off with another win in the long jump. The All-American leaped 20-10.75. In the men's long jump junior Austin Hazel was second at 24-9.75.

Senior Faith Anumba led a sweep in the triple jump as she won with a mark of 41-1. Sophomore Efe Agege was second at 40-2 while freshman Lillianna Hebert was third with a mark of 38-3.50. UCLA also went 1-2 on the men's side as Idrees Bernard notched a personal best with a mark of 50-6.75. CJ Alumbres followed at 49-8.50.

Freshman Michael Burke leaped to a new personal best to win the high jump. Burke cleared 7-1.75 while sophomore Sage Stone was third at 6-10.75.

On the track UCLA went 1-2 in the women's steeple with junior Emily Scharmann winning with a new meet record time and personal best of 10:23.11. Freshman Carolina Johnson made her debut with a time of 10:36.12.

In the men's steeple the Bruins had the only competitors on the track to go 1-2-3. Max Davis won the event with a time of 9:38.79. Cole Smith was second at 9:39.21 while Nolan Dickson cruised to a 9:47.98.

The Bruins dominated the field in the men's 1,500m as senior Ferdinand Edman led the group to a 1-2-3 finish with a near personal best of 3:43.81. Senior Lane Werley followed at 3:52.73 while freshman George Gleason was third at 3:54.94.

Sophomore Misana Viltz blitzed to a new lifetime best in the 110m hurdles as he clocked a time of 13.92. In the 100m hurdles senior Trinity Wilson was third with a season best 13.76.

UCLA swept the 400m hurdles as senior Andre Chapman ran a season best of 52.72 to win the event while senior Jarrett Gonzales closely followed at 52.94.

Senior Nick Hartle closed out his last rivalry dual meet with a kick down the last 100m to win with a time of 1:48.66. Freshman Arturo Sotomayor was third at 1:51.72. Freshman Julia Rizk ran a personal best 2:07.27 to finish second while senior Kim Mackay ran a season best 2:08.22 to finish third.

In the men's 5,000m the Bruins solidified the meet with a sweep. Senior Sergey Sushchikh won with a time of 14:29 while Daniel De La Torre was second at 14:40.81 and Jackson Marshall was third with a time of 14:42.27.

The Bruins will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, May 7 at the Occidental Invitational. UCLA starts the postseason at the Pac-12 Championships for the multis also on May 7.
