UCLA Loses Pitcher's Duel to Oregon St

May 28, 2016 | Baseball

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The UCLA Bruins lost a pitcher's duel to the Oregon State Beavers, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium. Griffin Canning surrendered just four hits in the one-run defeat.

Canning (5-8) got the tough luck loss after allowing just one run on four hits with six strikeouts in his fourth complete game of the season. Max Engelbrekt (3-3) earned the win, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Bruins out-hit the Beavers 8-to-4 and were led by Kort Peterson (2-for-3, 2B) and Trent Chatterton (2-for-4, 2B) who each had two hits and a double.

UCLA (25-29, 12-16) had the offense going early, but was unable to find the clutch hit in the opening three innings. The Bruins had at least one runner in scoring position in each frame, including the bases loaded in the second, but failed to score while leaving six runners on.

The game then turned into a pitcher's duel with Canning and Travis Eckert trading scoreless inning after scoreless inning until the seventh.

Oregon State (33-19, 14-14) would eventually score the game's first run in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Kyle Nobach and Cadyn Grenier teamed up to record back-to-back softly hit singles to move runners to the corners. Nick Madrigal then grounded out to third on a chopper to score Nobach and lift the Beavers to the 1-0 advantage.

That would be all Oregon State needed as UCLA couldn't find the answer over the final two frames. In total, the Bruins left nine runners on and went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the one-run loss.

UCLA and Oregon State play game two of the series tomorrow at 4:00pm PT at Goss Stadium. Fans can watch live on the Pac-12 Network or listen live at uclabruins.com.

Notes: Trent Chatterton has reached base in 15 consecutive games…Brett Urabe has recorded at least one hit in six consecutive games…Griffin Canning recorded his team-high fourth complete game…Canning has struck out at least five batters in 14 of his 15 starts and lasted at least five innings in every start, including eight times lasting at least seven innings.
