Oxy and Pac-12 Multis This Weekend

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA track and field's multi-event athletes will head to Seattle, Wash., this weekend to kick off the 2016 Pac-12 Championships. This two day meet will begin on Saturday, May 7 at the Husky Track. The Bruins will send some of the distance team to Eagle Rock, Calif., for the Oxy Invitational on Saturday, May 7.

The 2016 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships for multi-events will begin at Husky Track on Saturday, May 7, at 12 p.m. with the men's 100m and will resume again on Sunday, May 8, at 11:30 a.m. with the men's 110m hurdles. A three-hour show recapping the event will air on Sunday, May 22 at 9 am. PT/10 a.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.

The Oxy Invitational will begin with the men's shot put at 11:00 a.m. and the running events will start at 2:30 p.m. with the women's 100m hurdles. Live streaming of the meet will be broadcast online at flotrack.org.

The UCLA Track & Field men's team now ranks 17th in the USTFCCCA computer rankings after last weekend's win against rival USC.  UCLA also enters the meet with 11 individual marks in the top 25 in the country.

On the men's side senior Nicholas Scarvelis still leads the nation and ranks eighth in the world with his shot put of 67-7.50 and not far behind him is teammate Braheme Days ranking third in the nation with a throw of 66-3.75. On the track senior Nick Hartle ranks 11th with his 800m time of 1:46.73. At last weekend's dual meet against USC freshman Michael Burke leaped his way to 18th in the country with his high jump of 7-1.750. 

On the women's side Torie Owers ranks fourth in the shot put with her throw of 57-50 and senior Kylie Price ranks eighth with her long jump of 21-4.75.

So far in 2016 the Bruins have posted 12 all-time top-10 marks in school history. In her first season in a Bruin uniform Stamatia Scarvelis has thrown the seventh best hammer of all-time at 200-3 and the 10th best shot put mark of 54-11.50. Also in the shot put Owers ranks seventh with her 57-5 while Mary Geers is 10th in the hammer at 169-1.

Also on the women's side Emily Scharmann has clocked the second fastest steeple at 10:23.11 while Carolina Johnson in her UCLA outdoor debut ran the sixth fastest at 10:36.12. Also in her freshman season Angie Annelus clocked the 10th best 200m at 23.24 while newcomer Greta Wagner has cleared 13-8.50 in the pole vault for ninth all-time and transfer Kendall Gustafson posted the 10th best heptathlon score of 5,442 points.

On the men's side Hartle's time of 1:46.73 ranks third all-time while Scarvelis continues to climb up the prestigious shot put list with his mark of 67-7.50 ranking fourth all-time. Days follows in sixth with his throw of 66-3.75.

Next weekend the UCLA will continue at the Pac-12 Championships on Saturday, May 14 through Sunday May 15 back at the Husky Track.
