UCLA Tops UCI Behind Dyer's Gem
May 08, 2016 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – The UCLA Bruins bounced back to even the series by defeating the UC Irvine Anteaters, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark. Grant Dyer threw a complete game to lift the Bruins to the road victory.
Dyer (3-3) struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just one run on four hits over his nine innings to earn the victory. Cameron Bishop (5-4) received the loss for the Anteaters, allowing two runs on five hits over 6.2 innings.
The Bruin offense totaled nine hits in the win, led by Brett Urabe (2-for-5, R, RBI) and Eric Filia (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, BB) who each notched multi-hit afternoons.
UCLA (22-22) used a two-out rally in the second inning to jump out in front of UC Irvine early on. With two down and nobody on, Brett Stephens doubled to left center and was followed by Daniel Rosica who drew a walk. Then, Trent Chatterton roped a double inside the left field line to drive in Stephens and put the Bruins ahead, 1-0.
A finely executed safety squeeze would double the UCLA lead in the fourth to put them up by two. With runners on the corners and one away, Rosica laid down a fine bunt in front of the plate far enough to let the runner come into score and give the Bruins some extra breathing room.
UC Irvine (26-18) got that run back in the fifth to pull back within one. Grant Palmer led off the inning with a bloop double down the right field line and was cashed in two batters later on a ground out to make the count, 2-1.
That would stand as the only run of the afternoon for the Anteaters as Dyer continued to dominate on the mound, mowing through the UC Irvine lineup over the last four innings. UCLA added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth with an RBI-single from Urabe and an RBI-double from Filia, both with two outs, to reach the final score of, 4-1.
The final game of the series begins tomorrow at 1:00pm PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium. In honor of Mother's Day the Bruins will be hosting a yoga day on the field following the game.
