Bruins Earn ITA All-America Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. โ Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki earned All-America honors for the 2016 season, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced on Thursday.ย

McDonald, a junior from Piedmont, Calif., earned Singles All-American honors for the third straight year.ย Sixth-seeded McDonald became the 12th NCAA Singles Champion in UCLA history when he dispatched top-seeded Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State in straights in the men's championship final.ย Later that day, McDonald joined the ranks of history when he captured the doubles crown with partner Redlicki.ย The duo defeated Texas A&M's Arthur Rinderknech and Jackson Withrow in straights in the final.ย This was the first time in 45 years that UCLA won both the NCAA singles and doubles titles in the same yearโa feat that has only happened six times in school history, last occurring in 1971.ย McDonald also made history as the first man in 15 years to win both the NCAA singles and doubles titles in the same year, a feat that has occurred 38 times since 1883.
Two-time Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year McDonald ended the season with a 22-1 record at the top of the lineupโhis only loss at the hands of then-11th-ranked Ryan Shane of Virginia (Feb. 09).ย The Bruin posted a team-high 20-win streak this spring.ย In the final ITA Rankings, he was ranked No. 1 in the nation in singles.ย
McDonald also received Doubles All-American honors alongside Redlicki, a sophomore from Boca Raton, Fla.ย The 2016 NCAA Doubles Champions finished the season as the top-ranked doubles team in the nation.ย The duo was tabbed as the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year after posting a 19-6 overall record and going 11-5 against ranked opponentsโmost notably downing then-No. 3 Brett Clark/Robert Kelly of UNCย in the ITA National Men's Team Indoors semifinals (Feb. 14).ย This is Redlicki's first All-America honor.ย ย ย
