August 17, 2016 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES โ UCLA Bruin standout forward Tracy Murray will return to his familiar role as the men's basketball radio analyst this fall, joining play-by-play man Josh Lewin on all men's basketball radio broadcasts.
ย
Murray, a 12-year NBA veteran (1992-2004) and NBA Champion, served as UCLA's radio analyst for men's basketball games over the course of seven seasons from 2008-15. After a year hiatus from the position while working as shooting coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, Murray returns to his courtside position behind the mic and replaces Bruin teammate Darrick Martin in the analyst seat, who earlier this summer was named head coach of the NBA Development League's Reno Bighorns.
ย
Among the most talented frontcourt players in UCLA history, Murray starred for the Bruins from 1990-92, helping lead the program to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his three seasons. As a freshman (1990), Murray guided UCLA to the Sweet 16 while as a junior (1992), he led the Bruins to the Elite Eight.
ย
He currently ranks ninth on UCLA's all-time scoring list (1,792 points), having been the fourth-leading scorer in program history when he was drafted following the 1991-92 season. He registered career averages of 18.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game in 98 career contests.
ย
Hailing from nearby Glendora High School, Murray was selected as the No. 18 overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. He made his NBA debut with Portland on Nov. 8, 1992 and spent portions of three seasons with the Trail Blazers. His career also included stops with Houston, Toronto, Washington, Denver and the Los Angeles Lakers before returning to Portland.
ย
Murray concluded his NBA career having played in 659 contests (80 starts), averaging 9.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. After being acquired by Houston midway through the 1994-95 season, he helped the Rockets to a four-game sweep of the Orlando Magic in the 1995 NBA Finals.
ย
UCLA will open its 2016-17 regular season against Pacific in Pauley Pavilion on Friday, Nov. 11.
