Tommy Prothro is carried off after Rose Bowl win
Prothro to be Inducted Into Rose Bowl Hall of Fame
August 24, 2016 | Football
PASADENA -- The Tournament of Roses announced on Wednesday that Bruins Tommy Prothro (former head football coach at UCLA) and Art Spander (sportswriter and former UCLA student) will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. The Class of 2016, which also includes Bobby Bell (Univ. of Minnesota) and Ricky Ervins (Univ. of Southern California), will be inducted in a ceremony which will take place on January 1, 2017, outside the Rose Bowl Stadium, one day before the kickoff of the 103rd Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual.
Prothro's connection to the Rose Bowl Game spans as both an athlete and a coach, having played quarterback for Duke in the 1942 Rose Bowl Game and then serving as head coach for Oregon State University in the 1957 and 1965 Rose Bowl Games, and UCLA in the 1966 Rose Bowl Game. Prothro led the Bruins to their first ever victory in a Rose Bowl Game. That 14-12 win came over top-ranked Michigan State in the 1966 contest after guiding the Bruins to a 7-2-1 regular season record. Bob Stiles and Jim Colletto combined to stop the Spartan's two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter and preserved UCLA's initial post-season win. Two touchdown passes by quarterback Gary Beban in the final four minutes of the USC game pulled out a 20-16 win and completed a perfect conference slate for the Bruins while sending UCLA to Pasadena. Prothro was voted Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. He went on to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams in 1971 and later became the head man for the San Diego Chargers. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Prothro passed away in 1995 after a battle with cancer.
Spander is an award-winning American sports writer who has attended 63 consecutive Rose Bowl Games and covered the last 53 as a journalist. He began his career at United Press International in Los Angeles in 1960. He went on to work for the Santa Monica Outlook, San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Examiner. Born in Los Angeles, Spander is a graduate of Dorsey High School and attended UCLA.
The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame was established in 1989 to pay tribute to members of the Rose Bowl Game who have contributed to the history and excitement of the game, and those who embody the highest level of passion, strength, tradition and honor associated with The Granddaddy of THEM ALL. With the addition of this year's class, the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame includes 121 inductees over its 27-year history. Inductees are honored with a permanent plaque at The Court of Champions at the Rose Bowl Stadium, they are featured during the Rose Parade presented by Honda, and are recognized on the field during the Rose Bowl Game.
