Bruins head to Long Beach for first dual meet of the season

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA Track and Field is staying local for the first outdoor meet of the season. The Bruins are facing the Long Beach State University 49ers in a dual meet showdown at the Jack Rose Track in Long Beach, Calif. 

The meet will be on Saturday, March 4, beginning at Noon. The women's 4x100 meter relay will kick off the track events while the women's pole vault and men's high jump will headline the start of the field event competition.

The Bruins will head to Long Beach coming off a strong showing at the MPSF Indoor Championships in Seattle, as the UCLA men took third overall and the women secured a fourth place finish. 

Sophomore Dotun Ogundeji and senior Torie Owers tallied victories in the shot put competitions, with throws of 64.11.50 and 56.00-50, respectively. The heave from Ogundeji was on his final attempt and a two-foot personal best while Owers uncorked an indoor lifetime best.

Freshman Cassandra Durgy led the way for the distance squad with a 15th place finish in the mile with a personal-best time of 4:45.15, while junior Joe Herrera took fifth place in the 400-meter dash with his indoor best time of 46.98. Junior Kendall Gustafson was the runner-up in the pentathlon with a lifetime best score of 3,958 points.

In the field events, sophomore Elleyse Garrett tied for second in the pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 13-06.25 while junior Sage Stone took fifth in the men's high jump with a 6-11 effort. 

Looking ahead, a select group of Bruins will be competing in the NCAA Indoor Championships at Texas A&M starting on March 10. The next outdoor meet of the season will be the Pac 12 vs. Big Ten Challenge on Saturday, March 25 at Arizona State University.
