LOS ANGELES – UCLA baseball pitcher Griffin Canning has been voted the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the first time this season.
Canning, a junior from Coto de Caza, Calif., tossed a complete game shutout in the series opener at crosstown rival USC on Thursday. He struck out 10 Trojans and walked just one batter for his second complete game shutout of the season. The right-hander collected his sixth double-digit strikeout performance of the season and currently ranks fifth in the NCAA in strikeouts with 108.
The weekly award is chosen by fans on Twitter via @UCLAAthletics. The other nominee for this week's award was Madeline Jelenicki (softball).
The Bruins are on the road for the next four games as they head to No. 14 Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday before traveling to Washington State for a three-game Pac-12 series starting on Friday at 7 p.m. (PT).
