Former UCLA guard Larry Drew II helped the United States men's basketball team secure the gold medal at the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup on Sunday night with an 81-76 comeback win over Argentina.
 
The U.S. men's team (5-0) rallied in the second half, erasing a 20-point third-quarter deficit to defeat host Argentina (4-1) in the FIBA AmeriCup gold medal contest in Cordoba, Argentina.
 
Drew II, who starred as the Bruins' point guard in 2012-13, finished Sunday night's gold-medal contest with five points, five rebounds and three assists in 17 minutes.
 
Team USA center Jameel Warney finished with a team-leading 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Darrun Hilliard added 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
Sunday's title contest featured two contrasting halves. Team USA shot just 30.6 percent from the field in the first two quarters and trailed at halftime by a 42-27 margin.
 
In a game of two distinctly different halves, the USA struggled with it shooting in the game's first two quarters and shot 30.6 percent from the field, 44.4 percent (4-9 3pt FGs) from 3-point, while shooting and making just one free throw.
 
Early in the third quarter, Argentina used a 6-1 scoring run to push its margin to 48-28. Warney helped Team USA chip away at Argentina's cushion midway through the third quarter, before the U.S. squad outscored host Argentina, 48-24, the rest of the way.
 
Team USA used a 17-4 scoring run in a six-minute span late in the third quarter, reducing Argentina's advantage to 56-50 heading into the final quarter.
 
The U.S. program captured its seventh gold medal in FIBA AmeriCup/FIBA Americas Championship play. The FIBA AmeriCup 2017, considered the FIBA Americas zone championship, featured 12 nations from North America, Central America, the Caribbean and South America.
 
Drew II transferred to UCLA prior to the 2011-12 season and played as a senior for the Bruins in 2012-13. That year, he averaged 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while establishing a then-UCLA-record 256 single-season assists. He earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors that season, leading the Pac-12 in assists, assists per game (7.3) and assist-turnover ratio (2.98).
 
Drew II played in 12 games midway through the 2014-15 NBA season for the Philadelphia 76ers.
