Seven Bruins Earn All-American Accolades

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.ย --ย The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) announced the selection of the organization's 2016 Men's Division I All-America Team.
Comprised of 47 student-athletes, the team features players from 18 institutions as the the University of Southern California (seven), the University of California-Los Angeles (seven), University of California (six), University of the Pacific (four), Pepperdine University (three), Princeton University (three), Brown University (two), George Washington University (two), Harvard University (two), Stanford University (two), the University of California-Santa Barbara (two), Bucknell University (one), Iona College (one), Long Beach State University (one), Loyola Marymount University (one), Santa Clara University (one), the University of California-Davis (one) and the University of California-Irvine (one) each garnered a minimum of one athlete on either the First, Second, Third or Honorable Mention Division I All-America lists.
Headlining UCLA's list of seven All-Americans was senior attacker Ryder Roberts, the lone Bruin on the first team. He was second on the team in scoring (35 goals) and led the Bruins in steals (38), field blocks (15) and was third in assists with 29.
Senior attacker Patrick Fellnerย was the Bruins' only member on the second team. Fellner led UCLA in scoring (39 goals) and also contributed 20 steals and 19 assists and led the Bruins in sprints won with 17.
Senior goalkeeper Garrett Danner and senior center Gordon Marshall were both listed on the third team. Dannerย completed his UCLA career atop the leaders in saves (932) and set the all-time single-season record with 278 in 2015. Marshall was injured for most of the season, playing in only 14 games. He scored just six goals but drew 37 exclusions for third place on the team in limited action.
Senior defender Chancellor Ramirez, junior utility Alex Roelse and junior attacker Max Irvingย each were named honorable mention All-Americans to bring the Bruins' total to seven All-American selections this season. For Ramirez, it was his third-straight honorable mention honor while it was the secondย for Roelse. Ramirez scored a career-high 23 goals in 2016 and also added 12 assists and 10 steals. Roelse, fresh off an Olympic appearance, scored a career-best 29 goals this season and also added 18 assists and 12 steals. Irving was third on the squad in scoring with 30 goals and led the Bruins in assists (37) and was second in field blocks (12) andย third in steals (25). He also tied with Fellner for the team lead in sprints won with 17.
The mission of the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) is to promote the development and advancement of collegiate water polo.ย This shall be accomplished by providing its membership with professional education, services, training and a united voice.ย
Since 2005, it has been the goal of the ACWPC to bring a unified voice, abundant resources and recognition to collegiate programs across the USA. ย It is our hope that the ACWPC grows to include all collegiate coaches in all levels, serving to unite the collegiate water polo world to further protect and advance the sport at a time when budget cuts and sport elimination is commonplace. Join us and help us to build solid water polo programs that help to represent the institutions, the sport and the country on a level few sports have been able to accomplish. ย The overall academic and athletic abilities of our student-athletes is among the best in the nation, we hope to help all collegiate water polo coaches to continue this trend by offering solid educational programs, coaching insights and strategy, and networking opportunities that will foster long-term relationships.
