Bruins Welcome Ducks for Homecoming Tilt
October 17, 2017 | Football
LOS ANGELES -- UCLA (3-3, 1-2) returns to the Rose Bowl for a Homecoming battle against Oregon (4-3, 1-3) on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be televised by Pac-12 Networks. The Bruin IMG Radio Network will radio broadcast the contest, which will also be aired over Sirius/XM, uclabruins.com and tunein.com and the TuneIn App. Gary Beban and Maurice Jones-Drew will be the Honorary captains for the game. The 2017 season marks the 50th anniversary of Beban's Heisman Trophy campaign. Jones-Drew will be inducted into the UCLA Hall of Fame this weekend.
The Bruins, who are looking to halt a six-game overall series skid against the visitors from the Northwest, have won once in the last five meetings contested in the Rose Bowl. That victory came by the score of 16-0 on November 24, 2007. In the interim, Oregon has captured wins in the last meetings played in the Rose Bowl in the 2014 (30-42) and 2009 (10-24) seasons.
In the last meeting between the teams, a 2014 contest played before over 80,000 fans in Pasadena, Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota guided the Ducks to a 42-30 win. Mariota ran for 75 yards and two scores and threw for 210 yards and a couple of touchdowns. UCLA, which racked up 553 yards of offense (328 on the ground, 190 by Paul Perkins) scored the final 20 points of the game on two Brett Hundley scoring passes and a touchdown run by Nate Starks, but it was not enough.
IN ADDITION--
UCLA will introduce the nine new members of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame for 2017 at halftime and honor Gary Beban on the 50th anniversary of his winning the 1967 Heisman Trophy during the game. The HoF inductees are: Toby Bailey (men's basketball), Robin Beauregard (women's water polo), Monique Henderson (track & field), Maurice Jones-Drew (football), Bob Larsen (track & field/cross country coach), Kristen Maloney (gymnastics), Brandon Taliaferro (men's volleyball) and Gina Vecchione (softball). In addition, football coach and athletic department administrator Bobby Field will be inducted for his extraordinary service. Beban led the Bruins to a 24-5-2 record in his three varsity seasons and was a charter member of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame class includes seven Bruins who have totaled 17 national championships between them as either a player or coach (Bailey, Beauregard, Henderson, Larsen, Maloney, Taliaferro and Vecchione); three Olympians who combined for five medals (Beauregard, Henderson, Maloney); and a three-time Pro-Bowler (Jones-Drew).
