UCLA Coasts to 13-2 Win Over Long Beach State
February 03, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
LONG BEACH – The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 14 Long Beach State, 13-2, Friday at Lindgren Aquatics Center. Rachel Fattal scored four goals to lead the Bruins, who were playing their first game in 12 days.
UCLA needed less than a minute to get started, as Kodi Hill scored on a power play with 7:18 remaining in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. It was then Maddie Musselman who took advantage of a short-handed 49er attack and rocketed in the 19th goal of her freshman season to make it 2-0. After Long Beach State was unable to benefit from a Hill exclusion, the Bruins made it 3-for-3 on first-quarter power plays when Rachel Fattal netted her first of the game to give UCLA a 3-0 lead at the end of one.
With the Bruin offense slow to get started in the second frame, Carlee Kapana deflected multiple shots on goal to maintain the UCLA lead. At 4:30 of the second frame, Mackenzie Barr gave the Bruins their first even-strength score to make it 4-0. A flood of goals were scored beginning at the 1:03 mark, when Hill posted her second of the day. The Bruins' Alexis Angermund netted her first soon thereafter and Alexandra Massier ended the half with the 49ers' first to make the score 6-1.
Senior leadership took over in the third for the Bruins, as Alys Williams scored her first of the game, while Barr and Fattal each scored her second to bring the UCLA advantage to 9-1.
Angermund scored her second of the game less than a minute into the fourth quarter, while Fattal made it a hat trick at the 6:06 mark. The 49ers' Bridget Reynolds gave the home team its second goal of the game, but Fattal answered with her fourth and Alexa Tielmann tacked on her first of the evening and the final score of the contest to make it 13-2.
UCLA will hold its alumni game Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Bruins will then officially open their home schedule Friday, Feb. 17, when they host No. 6 UC Irvine (7:00 p.m.).
