March 04, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
SARATOGA, Calif. -- The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team began the MPSF portion of its schedule with a rout, as it defeated No. 10 San Jose State, 24-2, at West Valley College. Five Bruins recorded hat tricks in the win, as Maddie Musselman and Alexa Tielmann led the way with four goals apiece. Carlee Kapana, meanwhile, did not relinquish a single goal in her three quarters of play.
UCLA's Bronte Halligan got scoring started at 5:45 of the initial frame, for the first of her three goals. Forty-one seconds later, Tielmann put her first in the back of the net against the Spartans Katelynn Thompson. Musselman quickly added her first on a penalty shot, and UCLA (12-1, 1-0) led 3-0 less than midway through the first. Rachel Fattal, Alexis Angermund and Aubrie Monahan each added one to cap a balanced-scoring opening quarter at 6-0.
Halligan was the first to complete her trifecta, as the freshman scored the first two goals of the second. Musselman and Tielmann then followed suit to secure multi-goal games of their own, before Kelsey O'Brien went on a hot streak through the middle portion of the quarter. From 4:35 to 3:01 of the quarter, the senior poured in three consecutive goals to give the Bruins a 13-0 lead. Musselman then closed the quarter with her third to send UCLA to the break up 14-0.
Twenty seconds into the third, Kodi Hill scored her first of the game for the Bruins. Musselman then became the first to four with her score at 6:47 of the frame. Tielmann quickly matched her teammate with consecutive goals at 5:41 and 4:51 of the quarter, and Monahan added her second to end the third with UCLA leading 19-0.
San Jose State (6-11, 0-1) broke through in the fourth quarter with two goals against UCLA's Hannah Storum, who relieved Kapana in the cage to begin the final fame. The Bruins were too much, however, as they scored five goals in the fourth to cap the victory. Hill and Fattal each recorded her second score of the afternoon, Lizette Rozeboom added her first, Monahan completed her hat trick and Angermund tallied her second goal of the day to complete the Bruin scoring.
Kapana recorded eight saves in goal, while Storum added two in her one quarter of play.
Next up for the Bruins is their MPSF home opener with CSU Bakersfield. UCLA will host the No. 23 Roadrunners on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 1:00 p.m.
