
No. 3 UCLA Crushes No.12 UCSB, 19-2

HONOLULU – The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team had little trouble with No. 12 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon at the Hawai'i Invitational, defeating the Gauchos 19-2 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. With the win, the Bruins improved to 17-1 on the year while UCSB dropped to 15-9. Maddie Musselman led the way for the Bruins, as she posted a hat trick to bring her total to a team-best 45 goals on the year.
The Bruins opened up with the first five goals of the game in the first period. Alys Williams got the Bruins on the board in the opening possession (7:42) and UCLA was never threatened after that. UCLA also got goals from five different Bruins in the opening stanza, which included Musselman's first (6:47) to put UCLA up 2-0. The Bruins' got their third goal from Alexa Tielmann (5:43) and then Williams found the back of the cage again for her second score (4:55) to put UCLA out in front, 4-0. After a goal by UCLA's Aubrie Monahan (4:09) made it 5-0, the Gauchos scored on a power play to cut it to 5-1 (2:32). But Lizette Rozeboom (1:54) provided the answer with a goal at full strength to end the period with UCLA leading 6-1.
Another dominant 6-1 period in favor of the Bruins ensued with UCLA scoring the first six of the second quarter. Rachel Fattal scored her first goal of the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity (6:50), the Bruins' first of the game. Bronte Halligan made it 8-1 (5:22) and then Fattal added her second of the period (4:26). Mackenzie Barr became the eighth Bruin to score with an exclusion goal at the 3:24 mark of the second period. Musselman's second of the game pushed the lead to double digits (11-1) just 13 seconds after Barr's strike. Tielmann knotched her second of the game to give UCLA a 12-1 advantage (1:19). UCSB's Natalie Selin scored the Gauchos' only goal at full strength for the game (0:29) to end the scoring at 12-2 UCLA at the half.
UCLA pitched a shutout in the third will posting three more scores. Alexis Angermund struck first on a power play (7:34), followed by a goal at full strength from Rachel Whitelegge (6:04) to extend the lead to 14-2. Musselman completed her hat trick with 5:10 remaining to end the scoring in the third with UCLA leading 15-2.
Three more Bruins scored in the fourth quarter to give UCLA 13 different goal scorers for the game. UCLA also held the Gauchos scoreless in the fourth. Jenna Hurst added her first of the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity (7:42) followed by a goal from Grace Reego (5:45) that put UCLA up 17-2. Rozeboom scored her second of the game with 3:12 remaining and Nicole Reynolds scored the game's final goal (2:32) to provide the 19-2 final.
Carlee Kapana started in the cage for the Bruins and played the first three quarters while being credited with three saves. Hannah Storum came in relief in the fourth period and picked up two stops without allowing a goal. Kenzi Snyder started in goal for UCSB and played the first half, registering two saves while surrendering 12 goals. Devon Gasparini played the second half in the cage for the Gauchos, recording three stops while giving up seven more goals.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday, April 8 when they travel to Tempe, Ariz., to face fourth-ranked Arizona State in MPSF action at 1:00 p.m. PT.
