LOS ANGELES - Fifth-seeded UCLA made quick work of No. 27 Ole Miss in the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships on Saturday, cruising to a 4-0 victory at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts. With the win, UCLA earns a spot in next week's round of 16 in Athens, Ga. where the Bruins will take on 12th-seeded Texas A&M. The Aggies were 4-0 winners over Oregon in their second round encounter on Saturday.
Similar to its NCAA opener against Army West Point on Friday, UCLA (21-5) came out strong in doubles against the Rebels, taking two quick matches. Maxime Cressy and Ben Goldberg were victorious yet again on Saturday, as they were the first team to finish with a 6-3 victory at court No. 3. That was soon followed by another 6-3 UCLA win, this time by Joseph Di Giulio and Austin Rapp at court No. 2, to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Once in singles, Bruin freshman Evan Zhu dominated his opponent, Ricardo Jorge, at the No. 2 position, losing just three games en route to a 6-2, 6-1 victory to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. Playing next door at court No. 3, Logan Staggs was equally impressive, also losing three games to defeat Tim Sandkaulen, giving the Bruins a 3-0 advantage.
For the second match in a row, 60th-ranked Martin Redlicki would get the clinching win for the Bruins, as he upset 23rd-ranked Gustav Hansson, 6-3, 6-2 to send UCLA into the round of 16.
When play was suspended, Di Giulio was up a set and tied at 1-1 in the second set at court No. 6. Cressy dropped the first set against Fabian Fallert at court No. 4, but was leading 3-0 in the second. Rapp was down a set and 2-3 in the second at court No. 5.
With the loss, Ole Miss ends its season with a 17-10 overall record.
