Redlicki Drops Singles Opener, Preps for Doubles
May 24, 2017 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. โ UCLA junior Martin Redlicki fell to Georgia Tech's Christopher Eubanks in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships Wednesday at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. No. 60 Redlicki fell to the seventh-ranked and fifth-seeded Eubanks in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, and will now turn his attention to doubles play.
In the first set, Redlicki broke Eubanks down 2-4 to pull within one game of the highly-touted Yellow Jacket. Eubanks recovered with a break of his own to take a 5-3 advantage, and eventually took the first set by a 6-3 score.
The players traded games in the second set and found themselves knotted at two apiece. That was when Redlicki made his move, as the Boca Raton, Fla. native took the next two games and a 4-2 lead. Eubanks battled back, however, as the junior from Atlanta broke Redlicki and then swept the eighth game for a 4-4 tie. Redlicki responded to take a 5-4 lead, but Eubanks ultimately proved too strong. His 7-5 second set capped the straight-set victory and clinched a trip to the second round.
The loss ended Redlicki's singles campaign at 29-9 (22-4) in dual-match play.
Along with Evan Zhu, Redlicki will take on the Auburn tandem of Maxime Hinnisdaels and Conner Huertas in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship Thursday. The Bruins duo is seeded No. 2 in the tournament and will look to bring the doubles title back to UCLA for a second consecutive year. Redlicki teamed with Mackenzie McDonald to capture the 2016 championship in Tulsa, Okla.
